Urgent Care, the ER & Bills

Sometimes you can’t wait for a VA appointment. VA lets you use an urgent care clinic in its network without a referral, and you can always go to the nearest emergency room without asking VA first. But the rules matter. VA must be told within 72 hours of an ER visit, out-of-network urgent care isn’t covered, and most other outside care needs VA approval first. This page explains when you can go outside VA and what VA pays. It also covers what happens in network and out of network, when you qualify for community care, how to handle a bill, and why you should tell your VA team after any outside visit. Save the key numbers in your phone now, so you have them when you need them.
