Caregiver Programs
If you care for a veteran, VA may be able to help you as well as the veteran. VA has two caregiver programs:
-
PCAFC (Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers): a monthly stipend, CHAMPVA health coverage, at least 30 days of respite a year, and counseling, for veterans rated 70% or more who need personal care.
-
General Caregiver Support: training, peer support and respite, with no rating required.
This page covers:
-
every PCAFC requirement, including why supervision counts
-
how the stipend levels work
-
how to document care before you apply and what to expect at the home assessment
-
what to do if VA says no
-
protections for legacy families
-
home care programs many families never hear about, like Veteran Directed Care, which can pay a family caregiver
-
extra money like SMC aid and attendance
-
help just for the caregiver

Download the free VA Caregiver Programs Guide & Checklist. It has a PCAFC requirements check, a two-week care log, a supervision and safety log, an other-help checklist, and an assessment and contact log. It also has a caregiver statement that links to our Statement Writer.
Veterans Claims Education provides education only and does not assist with or file claims. For help, contact the VA Caregiver Support Line at 855-260-3274 or an accredited VSO.
