Rated by Analogy
Rated by Analogy explains what happens when your condition doesn’t have its own diagnostic code in VA’s rating schedule. “No code” is not a reason to deny a claim. VA must rate it like the closest listed condition, based on the body function affected, where it is and the symptoms (38 CFR § 4.20).
On this page you’ll learn:
-
how to read a code like 8199-8100 or 6399-6350 on your decision letter: the body system, then “99” for “not listed by name,” then the code VA borrowed (38 CFR § 4.27)
-
which common conditions are rated this way, like tension headaches, PCOS, Sjögren’s, POTS and Long COVID
-
when analogy isn’t allowed because your condition has its own code
-
what to do if VA picked the wrong comparison code, with real examples
