Asbestos Claims:
All Branches

This guide is for any veteran exposed to asbestos during service, in any branch and any job. The Navy used asbestos in pipes, boilers, gaskets, valves and sleeping spaces, and shipyard overhauls stirred it up. The Army, Air Force, Marines and Seabees met it in vehicle brakes and clutches, construction, aircraft and old barracks. Asbestos diseases like asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer often show up decades later, so many veterans and their families are dealing with them now. Asbestos claims aren’t presumptive, but they can be won. This guide shows where exposure happened in each branch, which jobs and spaces had the most exposure, and the conditions VA links to asbestos. It also explains when a presumptive list may be an easier path. You’ll learn how to prove exposure with your job, ships, units and statements, what a strong medical opinion includes, how smoking and post-service work are handled, how these conditions are rated, and what survivors can claim. Real-life examples and links to official sources are included throughout. Download our free Asbestos Claim Kit (PDF), with an exposure history worksheet, statement templates for you and a shipmate or coworker, a doctor’s opinion request letter, and a checklist.
